The Problematic Carport

1. The problem is this: See the L shape where the carport roof meets the house roof? Well, now that we’ve straightened out the foundation, and (even though you can’t see it in this early picture) added a room on top of it, there is a big gaping hole that gets veeeerrry wet. So, that’s gotta be fixed.

2. First, we cut the carport roof all the way back to where it attaches to the house. No more L shape.

3. Next, we nailed a 2×6 to the wall of the house, and, using joist hangers, hung 2×6s from the house to the carport. (This picture is taken from inside, through a screen, if you’re wondering.)

4. The existing carport is sheeted with strips of tongue and groove cedar. They aren’t particularly sturdy, and they have a tendency to crack. To avoid these problems, we bought sheets of plywood and, using the router, cut grooves into it. It achieves the same look, but it’s more solid and much, much cheaper. (It’s also extremely time consuming, just to give you a heads up.)

5. And then we plopped the sheets of plywood on our 2×6 joists and nailed them down.

6. Here it is, all tied into the house.
