Fed Up with Washington State
As a native of the high desert country, I spent summers praying for rain, and winters praying for snow. And then I moved to the Pacific Northwest, where it’s not uncommon for it to precipitate for 30 days straight. Or for rivers to flood uncontrollably. Or for your street to look like a lake. But even this was new to me:
My side yard. And this wasn’t even as high as it got. At the worst, you couldn’t see a hint of grass. There was a cooler, paint buckets, and misc. trash floating in it.

Looking out my living room window, at my yard and driveway. Normally, my car would be parked to the far left. It’s up around the corner. Still.

The carport. The bad news. Its got about a 1/2 higher than this!!

Leave it to boys to find it fun! My husband takes the canoe out. The neighbors think it’s a riot until the water continues to rise and it floods their car.

Eventually, we become a local attraction. Neighbors from a couple blocks away drive through our street just to see if they can make it. They send waves into the house. Eventually someone calls the police, because really, that’s ridiculous. At least these kids just bring their paddle boat.

I’m officially over living in this state. Everything I once found good about it drowned. If you live in northern New Mexico, or the mountains of Arizona, e-mail me with job listing and realtors. Seriously.

January 9th, 2007 at 9:17 am Is the house ok? Get the heaters out to kill the mold! I would love to have you back in the high desert country again! Or at least on higher ground! How much rain did you get?
January 9th, 2007 at 9:45 am The house if fine. We’ll check the crawl space today and see how it’s doing, and, if need be, pump the water out. We’ll treat all the posts with Boracare this spring, which will prevent dry rot and bugs. Oh joy. We didn’t really get that much rain. Probably less than an inch, but it was on top of saturated ground. Start sending us real estate magazines for the area, as well as Northern NM and the Montrose area!! Seriously!!
January 19th, 2007 at 7:30 am You can’t leave us !!!! Move to higher ground! John and I will die!
January 19th, 2007 at 2:31 pm Oh, yeah, because hills are safe. Then you slide away in the mud, or get the brunt of the wind and trees topple on your house. Plus, we are officially NOT in flood zone, and yet… I reeeeallly could use a drying out… Plus, just think– you guys would have a permanent vacation home!
January 27th, 2007 at 2:05 pm Was Brian reminiscing about canoe trips to Minnesota? It’s a lot drier down here in Southern California! I hardly ever get caught in a flood, or mudslide, or fire, or earthquake, or… I’m sure we could find another house for you to fix up!
January 30th, 2007 at 9:21 am But Southern Cali doesn’t get SNOW! We love snow!
February 1st, 2007 at 10:32 pm We get the best kind of snow… It stays in the local mountains (only a 2 hour drive) and we visit it whenever we feel the need to throw a snowball, or ski, or snowboard, or ice skate, or…
February 2nd, 2007 at 11:38 am Nope, it’s got to be the right out front kind. Sorry, dude. 2 hours is a lifetime away… But we should defintely come down and visit you!!
February 8th, 2007 at 8:06 pm I had no idea you are having flood problems. Have you talked to the city about fixing this? That canoe looks familiar. The house looks great.
February 9th, 2007 at 12:12 pm JASON!!! HI!!! We miss you; come see us!!! Yes, the city is looking into the problem. There should be a meeting regarding the flooding issue (we’re not the only street) sometime this month or next. And anytime you want to take a ride in the canoe, you’re welcome to!
